Workin’ it, workin’ it, workin’ it!

I’ve reached the age where everyone around me has or is encountering relationship turbulence of some kind, with varying levels of duration, gravity, scope. I’m now convinced there is no such thing as a relationship not requiring some form of work, and anyone who claims their marriage to be issue-free is blatantly lying. Even if only to themselves. And here’s another admission: analyzing relationship issues (especially those of others) provides no end of fascination. “Jesus! Don’t you women have anything better to do than splice and dice everything?” laments my friend Philip. The answer is no, we don’t. We love to dissect. So there. In a recent issue of the New York Times Magazine, Elizabeth Weil asks Can you really improve your marriage? and takes the splicing and dicing to dizzying new heights. This detailed, brilliantly crafted article is hilarious, poignant, grave, caustic, educational and so entertaining. Worth the read.

And I would add, loosely quoting Joan Didion, that “the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life is the source from which self-respect springs”.
Thumbs ups for this great blog!
